Photographing Bavarian folklore, dark humor, and theatrical energy on stage
On January 14th, 2015, I had the chance to photograph the general rehearsal of “Boandlkramerblues” performed by the Münchner Volkssänger-Bühne (MVB). This production brings the Bavarian figure of the Boandlkramer — a humorous, slightly clumsy version of Death — into a modern comedic play full of music, folklore, and emotional storytelling.
The rehearsal offered the perfect environment for photography: unfiltered acting, spontaneous emotions, and a cast fully immersed in their roles without the pressure of a live audience. The images capture the charm, humor, and melancholic undertone that define this Bavarian classic.
The Story
“Boandlkramerblues,” written by Roland Beier, tells the story of Isidor Birnbacher, a man who has outlived his friends and feels weary of life. But when he asks Death to finally take him, the Boandlkramer has other plans — and even threatens to take Isidor’s wife instead. What unfolds is a mix of dark comedy, heartfelt moments, and musical interludes that highlight the absurdity and beauty of life and death.
What the Photos Capture
• Expressive characters & makeup
The Boandlkramer — pale face, hat with a flamboyant feather, theatrical gestures — is visually striking and central to the imagery. His presence blends humor and eeriness in a way that is uniquely Bavarian.
• Emotional storytelling
From the desperation and confusion of Isidor Birnbacher to comedic exchanges and angelic appearances, the rehearsal provided a wide range of emotions that shine through in close-ups and ensemble scenes.
• Musical elements
The musicians, from trombone to clarinet to guitar, add rhythm and atmosphere. Their involvement reminds us that this play is not just comedy — it’s a blend of theater and live music.
• Theatrical movement & lighting
Strong contrasts, spotlight moments, and shadowed stage corners create a dramatic and intimate mood. The rehearsal’s organic, unpolished energy makes each scene feel immediate and alive.
• Ensemble chemistry
The images show how closely the actors work together — laughing, arguing, scheming, dancing. Their dynamics give the play its comedic rhythm and emotional weight.
Why This Rehearsal Was Special
General rehearsals are where the magic happens: actors push deeper into their roles, timing becomes sharper, and the story unfolds with raw honesty. Photographing “Boandlkramerblues” in this stage felt like being invited into the heart of Bavarian theater — full of charm, music, humor, and folklore.
This session not only documents a performance but celebrates a tradition that blends dark humor with heartfelt storytelling, a theme that Bavarian theater has perfected over generations.
