Reimagining the iconic world of Metropolis through modern studio photography
For this fashion photoshoot, we drew inspiration directly from Fritz Lang’s legendary 1927 film Metropolis — a cinematic milestone that shaped the visual language of science fiction. Our goal was to translate the film’s futuristic style, dramatic lighting, and robotic elegance into a contemporary portrait session.
The shoot began with minimalist white outfits that echo the film’s striking contrast between the workers’ world and the ethereal presence of Maria. Clean, sculptural fabrics, bold collars, and futuristic silhouettes created a look that feels both vintage and ahead of its time. Strong studio lighting enhanced the Metropolis mood: sharp shadows, defined highlights, and a sense of industrial geometry.
Later, we transitioned into metallic and translucent garments inspired by the Maschinenmensch (the robot) — one of cinema’s most iconic designs. These looks introduced a sleek, mechanical aesthetic: shimmering materials, reflective textures, and expressive, structured poses. The portraits capture the core themes of Metropolis — the tension between human emotion and machine perfection.
Black-and-white versions honor the silent-film roots, preserving the dramatic contrasts and timeless atmosphere of Lang’s original vision. Color treatments bring a modern interpretation of retro-futurism, showing how a nearly century-old film still influences fashion, photography, and visual storytelling today.
This photoshoot became a creative exploration of retro-futuristic fashion, Metropolis-inspired portraiture, and the ongoing fascination with the fusion of humanity and technology.
