Photographing the general rehearsal of Romeo oh Romeo with the Münchner Volkssängerbühne e.V. (MVB) was an inspiring dive into a world of expressive theatre, handmade costumes, and passionate storytelling. This satirical, Bavarian-flavoured interpretation of the Romeo & Juliet motif blends humour, music, drama and local charm—all of which made it a perfect environment for dramatic stage photography.
The rehearsal allowed me to move freely around the stage, capturing emotions up close: intense monologues, heartfelt duets, lively ensemble scenes, and comedic interactions between the characters. The richly detailed Renaissance-style costumes, historical props and warm stage lighting created a cinematic atmosphere that translated beautifully into photos.
From sword fights and heartfelt declarations to humorous asides and emotional confrontations, the play offered a wide range of expressive moments. Shooting a general rehearsal is always special—there’s no audience yet, but all the energy of a live performance. The actors are fully immersed in their roles, and the raw, unfiltered emotion becomes visible in every gesture and expression.
Working with the Münchner Volkssängerbühne again was a pleasure. Their dedication to local theatre culture and their ability to bring classic stories into a Bavarian comedic context makes every performance unique and memorable.
